People-to-People educational itinerary developed by John and Mary Stachnik, Founders and Co-owners.

Travel from your home town to Miami, Florida, where we meet our fellow People To People participants at the hotel. Our program begins at 6:00pm with a reception and orientation session. We will hear from an expert about US-Cuba relations and the impact it has had on both countries. There is also paperwork and documentation that we fill out together in anticipation of our Cuban visit.

Transfer to Miami International Airport for our charter flight to Cuba. You will be amazed that a country so remarkably different than America is less than an hours’ flying time away. Upon arrival in Cienfuegos, Cuba, our home for the next two nights, we take a panoramic tour, followed by an Orientation Walk. There is a visit to the Thomas Terry Theater, as well as a chance to learn about shopping in Cuba and the different types of stores and availability of products. There is an evening performance by the Cienfuegos Choir at our hotel. Breakfast and dinner

This morning we visit a cigar factory where we can interact with the employees. Then, we stop at Cienfuegos Botanical Gardens where we interact with a specialist to learn about plant life and conservation in Cuba, as well as about the close ties the Gardens have with Harvard University. On the way to Trinidad we visit a Ceramic Studio and Gallery and learn about their long traditions with this art form. Walk through Trinidad’s cobblestone streets before lunch at a local paladar where we interact with these young entrepreneurs. Visit to Casa de la Trova and meet with local musicians and dancer, during an interactive salsa session. Back to Cienfuegos where dinner this evening is at a local private restaurant. Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Our first stop is in Santa Clara where we see the Che Guevara Memorial and Mausoleum. We also have interaction with the Kids Choir or a Theater Performance followed by lunch at a local restaurant. Before leaving Santa Clara we visit the School of Art, Dance and Music. We come to our home for the next two nights, the Playa Cayo Santa Maria, a resort located on a grouping of islands which jut into the Atlantic. Dinners, breakfasts and beverage service are included in our stay here. Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Let’s take a bicycle-taxi tour of Remedios and learn about Parrandas (a festival of competition among neighborhoods featuring floats and brilliant costuming.) We’ll visit the Cathedral here and learn of the many community projects they have for residents of all ages. This afternoon we board an antique sugar cane steam train. En route the train stops at El Curujey Restaurant for a typical farm lunch. Learn how the trains were restored, and visit the Sugar Factory and Museum to understand this important part of Cuba’s history. Arrive in Caibarien with an overview of the city. We see an old printing press that came from the United States and learn of its usage. Meet with local artists to learn of their community Project Por La Costa. Back to our resort lodging. Breakfast, lunch and dinner

On our way to Havana we visit the farm Fiesta Campesina, where we interact with the farmers and have lunch. There will be artisans from the area there as well. In Havana we visit the Angeles del Futoro community program for kids, where they learn gymnastics and acrobatics. Cuba has an estimated 66,000 cars in operation that are from the 1950s and 1960s, and it seems most of them are on the lightly traveled streets of Cuba’s capital. We check into the Melia Cohiba for three nights. Tonight, we visit the home of a young couple, one of which is an artist, to learn about life in Cuba today. Then, dinner at a local paladar. Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Meet with a local architect for a most enlightening walk through Old Havana. Learn about its restoration works and future plans. There is a visit to Arte Corte Community Project before lunch at a local paladar in the Santo Angel neighborhood. Later we will have a presentation at our hotel by the Cuban Institute of Music, with a chance to interact with the musicians and staff. The evening is free for dinner, and those who wish can attend the Cannon Firing Ceremony at Cabana Castle. Breakfast and lunch

This morning will be a panoramic tour of Havana with overviews of the city, Plaza de la Revolucion, the Capitol, the Malecon, University of Havana and the Vedado neighborhood. Meet and mingle with the artisans of the San José Craft Market, with time to shop for indigenous arts and crafts. Immerse yourself in Cuban Cinema with interactive discussions. Lunch at a local café before visiting Casa Fuster and the Jaimanitas neighborhood. This evening we will have a fleet of antique cars meet us at our hotel. We have time to inspect the cars, talk shop with their owners, and find out just how they manage to keep their cars running without replacement parts available to them. We then travel in style in these antique cars to our farewell dinner. Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We take our short flight back to Miami mid-morning with time to catch connecting flights*. Connecting flights should depart Miami after 3:30pm. Memories of one of the most unique excursions you could ever take will reside with you for years to come. Breakfast
