Clayoquot Wilderness Resort – Canada

Remote, Refined, Remarkable

About the Resort

Located near the village of Tofino, Vancouver Island, Canada, and accessible by a scenic 45 minute private seaplane transfer from Vancouver, BC, or a 30 minute boat ride from Tofino, rests our exclusive eco-safari destination called Clayoquot Wilderness Resort.

Open annually from mid May until the end of September and offering 3, 4 and 7 night all inclusive adventures great for the entire family. Please contact us for more information and rates.

The Story

Inspired by late 19th century Great Camps, Clayoquot Wilderness Resort promises the perfect pairing of soft adventure and soft beds. Situated at the mouth of the Bedwell River, on Vancouver Island, an enclave of 20 deluxe canvas guest tents, massage and treatment tents, dining tents, lounge tents and a massive timber cookhouse are tucked into the dense brush on discreetly‐situated raised wooden platforms. Thermostat controlled propane wood stoves, antique dressers and tea tables, opulent rugs, oil lamps, heirloom china and silver accessories, and an abundance of candles complete the offering.

A quick floatplane from south of Vancouver drops you off in one of the most spectacular areas on Vancouver Island – the Clayoquot Sound. You are welcomed with a handshake, by a family of staff, to this luxury outpost resort; though by the time you leave you are offered a great big hug. It quickly becomes apparent that all attention is on the guest experience with staffing levels of three to one and expert service that is friendly and unpretentious. Sleeping in luxury tents scattered along either the river’s edge or within the depths of the rainforest you quickly discover a sense of harmony with nature.

Family Friendly

While it is hard to imagine a more intimate destination than the intensely romantic Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, the resort has become a recurring favourite for families.

Resort accommodations, food and beverage programs, activities and adventures and conservancy programs offer something for all ages and inclinations. Couples, grandparents, school-age children, teens – regardless of experience – find their ideal program of custom-designed fun and adventure at the Resort.

The months of May and September are perfect for couples, while the summer months might better suit high-energy family gatherings.

Lounge Tents

accom_16No true safari, eco or otherwise, would be complete without at least one tent assigned to the pursuit of sensory pleasures like reading, games, lounging and select barrel-aged spirits.

The Resort has two such lounges – a games tent, and an art tent. The former, a plush turn-of-the-century collection of dark polished woods, beautiful fabrics and burnished leather, reference the iconic Gentlemen’s Clubs of old. Here, guests lose themselves in the arts of conversation and low-tech competition.

Antique furnishings display an impressive collection of antique and contemporary games of chance and skill. The art tent filled with water colours, will captivate the attention of any child, young and old.

A full billiards table with plush sitting area fills the busy pool tent. Antique fixtures, a game of 8 ball and you will believe that you are in a wild west setting.

In-Room Amenities

accom_06By design there are no in-room telephones or televisions. The resort communicates with a marine fleet, the Canadian Coastguard and other essential services via a failsafe VHF radio system and a boosted cellular phone is available for emergency calls in the Resort office.

dining_08Entering the cookhouse, comfortable furnishings and tasteful decor invite you into the open concept space that feels like a family cottage.

Enjoy a culinary experience that would rival any upscale urban dining establishment, including Dungeness crab pulled from the nearest cove, bountiful fresh fish from the ocean or a fine selection of prime meats all prepared with obvious passion and creativity.

Wine pairings of BC’s finest wines are introduced with great skill and description by the resident sommelier. You will be more than satisfied by every meal and will eagerly anticipate the next.

Wilderness Activities

heli-hiking-11An abundance of daily wilderness activities await you at this resort, including sea and river kayaking, horseback rides, skeet shooting, archery, bear and whale viewing, rock climbing, hiking, biking, fishing and cooking.

Your days are completely flexible and personalized here – fill them with expert guides showing you the way on a myriad of adventures, or relax around the resort in deck chairs placed in view of snow-capped mountaintops.

Our first adventure was white water kayaking; a voyage along 11km of river, paddling through a dozen rapids. Suited up in waterproof gear, and once oriented in our individual kayaks, we launched into the river for a truly exhilarating experience.

An early morning departure into the local fjords to search for bears by zodiac will leave you enamoured by the natural beauty of this environment. A dense fog set the perfect scene to approach a family of bears calmly turning over rocks in search of food. Upon your return don cowboy boots for a horseback ride on rainforest trails and across mountain streams.

Horsemanship and riding are signatures of the resort, with a range of talented horses for the beginner to the expert rider.

Outpost Spa

hg_01Very near to the place where the cookhouse casts its shadow on the shore of the Bedwell River sits the beautiful Healing Grounds, an eco‐safari style massage and therapeutic treatment centre with the soul of an outpost spa and a personality all its own.

Massage tents and treatment rooms, hot tubs and a sauna artfully compose a rest and relaxation destination of intimate proportions.

The resort offers a rare combination of individual pampering, and remote, untamed wilderness.

Clayoquot Wilderness Resort1 We mean business. But our strategies may be a little bit wild.

Fact is, we can take your leadership team almost anywhere you want to go, and they will have more fun getting there, and get greater results upon arrival, than you ever dreamed possible. We know relaxation, play, and inspiring environments are three key components of productive mental therapy. We know that in order to think outside the box, one has to get outside the box — sometimes way out.

romance_06What better place to begin a new life together than in the land that time forgot? Where balmy summer days and wild nights inspire romance and relaxation, and the heady rainforest air is as pure and intoxicating as new love.

Weddings for the Wild at Heart

accom_09There is something in the air at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort. Something that makes love grow wild.

Here, engagements, weddings, anniversaries and romantic rekindlings take on a spiritual quality found nowhere else in the world.

Family Gatherings/Re-unions

activity_58With relatives spread out across the continent, a get-away that includes the entire family may be just what the GP ordered. In fact, over the past three years, Clayoquot Wilderness Resort has seen a sharp increase in large family groups coming to experience the resort’s remote pleasures.

With a setting described as “an upside down rainforest” by National Geographic Magazine, Clayoquot has something for every generation on the family tree. For the fitness-buff and thrill seeker there is hiking, horseback riding and rock climbing; the traditional family picnic is replaced with bear watching and river or ocean kayaking; and the solitude-seeker can curl up in an overstuffed chair in front of the fireplace, or experience a stimulating massage and facial.
